چکیده

In situ satellite observations of type III burst exciters at 1 AU show that the beam does not evolve into a plateau in velocity space, contrary to the prediction quasilinear theory. The observations can be explained by a theory that includes mode coupling effects due to excitation of the parametric oscillating two-stream instability and its saturation by anomalous resistivity. The time evolution of the beam velocity distribution is included in the analysis.

Type I radio bursts and the minimum between sunspot cycles 22 & 23

Spectral observations of Type I radio bursts published in the Solar Geophysical Data are used to show that the minimum between solar cycles 22 & 23 occurred during October 1996.

Propagation of shock waves in the solar corona with 2-D loop structures

Motivated by recent observations of type II radio bursts, we study propagation of shock waves by the twodimensional numerical magnetohydrodynamic model. Explosion of a hot plasma is investigated for various ratios of the mass density and magnetic field intensity in a fan of coronal loops. Ducting of shock waves occurs along loop-like structure and ducting of possible radio emission in under-den...

Progress on Coronal, Interplanetary, Foreshock, and Outer Heliospheric Radio Emissions

Type II and III solar radio bursts are associated with shock waves and streams of energetic electrons, respectively, which drive plasma waves and radio emission at multiples of the electron plasma frequency as they move out from the corona into the interplanetary medium. Analogous plasma waves and radiation are observed from the foreshock region upstream of Earth’s bow shock. In situ spacecraft...

Radio Emission from Magnetars

We discuss properties of the expected radio emission from Soft Gamma-ray Repeaters (SGRs) during their bursting activity in the framework of the model of Thompson, Lyutikov and Kulkarni (2002), in which the high energy emission is powered by the dissipation of super-strong magnetic fields in the magnetospheres through reconnection-type events. Drawing on analogies with Solar flares we predict t...

Effects of Solar Radio Bursts on Wireless Systems

We review the state of current understanding of the potential for interference and interruption of service of wireless communications systems due to solar radio bursts. There have been several reported instances of an enhanced rate of dropped cell-phone calls during solar bursts, and the design of current base station systems make them vulnerable to problems near sunrise and sunset for antennas...
